Skills They Don't Teach in Med School

It's the first day back after Thanksgiving, so here's a
short, surprisingly slow-paced yet interesting video
to distract you oh so briefly from the fact that it's
still the first day back after Thanksgiving.

Important Questions on a Day like Today

Are you still sleeping off the Thanksgiving food coma?

Are you scared that one of your patients will ask you
why they feel tired after sleeping more than usual,
and you won't have an answer?

Well, check out this video from mental floss
to learn a bit more about that phenomenon.

It's a Perfect Day for Active Wear

It's the day after Thanksgiving, which means Black Friday
sales and leftovers galore. It might even mean some active
wear for people who want to make sure that other people
perceive them as being pro-active about maintaining a
fit and healthy lifestyle despite yesterday's food-centric excesses.

There's No MSTP Seminar Today!

Safe travels to everyone heading out of town for Thanksgiving today.
We hope that those of you who work with human subjects also
take the opportunity to enjoy some time over the weekend to
be away from the everyday stresses of your work.

It's Almost Surprising that Nobody Thought of This Sooner

There's an awesome new development in accessibility tech -- a man has developed a hands-free wheelchair for his paraplegic friend. Check out the video here; it's pretty cool!

Vocabulary Booster

Medicine and Science are all about precision when
it comes to the language used in the field. Here are some
nifty new terms that, while not necessarily technical or
field-specific, may impress some of your colleagues
next time you're trying to describe a patient's oddly-shaped rash.

Interview Strategies

The UW MSTP currently has quite a few skilled bakers and home cooks.
Who's to say this strategy isn't already a proven winner?

The Real Question is Whether Papers and Med School Modules "Count" as Books.

Hey, bookworms! The Pew Research Center put together
some figures on how many books various demographics
read per year in America. Check out the short video above
for more info. How does your reading compare?

Wellness Comes in Many Forms

Gentle reminder from the blog of the UW MSTP that
wellness and well-being are more than just checking
off whether or not you've engaged in "enough" of
the "right" healthy behaviors on a given day, no matter
how much your peers/colleagues/superiors won't stop
talking about how many miles they ran this morning/week/month.

And you folks out there who chug that kale shake
at 4am every morning? You're great. Your peers who choose
not to live that lifestyle? They are also great.

Here at the blog of the UW MSTP, we are all about
perspective and remembering to appreciate modern medicine
and the value of using scientific evidence to guide treatments.
