When My Undergrad Tells Me They will be Applying to Medical School and Plan to Submit Everything Right Before the Deadlines

This actually happened.
They were SO CONFIDENT that everything
would be totally cool and that this plan of action
would not hurt them in any way.

Model Organisms 101

Fun Fact: two of the four lab animal species profiled in this video
have been used in the research of at least one current UW MSTP student!

Do you know which ones?

Happy (belated) birthday Michael R.!

The Wisconsin MSTP blog would have announced this on Saturday...but given the retreat and the *cough* excessive celebration that MAY OR MAY NOT have taken place that day, it was perhaps best that the Wisconsin MSTP blog admins did not have access to their laptops.

We hope this video of tiny, tiny animals brightens your day!

First Med School Block Exams

Our Med1's have their first block of exams today.
Good luck, Med1's! You'll soon see that there's nothing
quite like the sweet, sweet freedom of post-block-exam recovering.

It's That Time of Year Again

Today is the last day of the yearly MSTP Retreat.
As per tradition, there was food, there was bonding,
and a good time was generally had by all.

Hope your fourth year is going well, and bear in mind--if you don't party hearty, the Birthday Toad is gonna be pissed.

And you don't want that.

Ah, Diversity.

This billboard seems to suggest that, at the very least, Madison
is more culturally diverse than some of the cities
located between our isthmus and Chicago.

(And yes, we have actual Mexican restaurants.)

All Grown Up!

Yet another video for those pesky questions
that are seemingly so straightforward but not
necessarily covered directly in the medical school
curriculum. Did you know when each of these organ
systems stops growing relative to the average human body?

You Can Do It!

We're just about a month into the school year for our
Med 1 and Med 2 students. The Med 2's have already
watched their first exams of the year come and go,
and the Med 1's will be taking their first block of exams
in about two weeks. Here's to a great year, everyone!
It'll be May before you know it.

When I Get Matched to Be An MSTP Mentor

(Although truth is that our MSTP Mentor Program
is awesome, 100% voluntary, and can be super helpful.)

Happy Birthday Maria S.!

Here's to your first birthday ever as an MD/PhD student! Hope you're having an excellent day!

The guinea pigs represent perseverance.  Or something.

(Also: Site review today!  Be good, everyone!)

Happy birthday Daryl F. and Zachary M.!

You share a birthday, but fear not, the Wisconsin MSTP blog is not so crass as to make you share an e-present.

For Daryl: You are SO CLOSE to the end of your PhD.  SO CLOSE.
We thought you might appreciate this, the Parable of the Doge.  Hopefully it doesn't strike a little too close to home.

For Zach: Everyone has heard of Nietzsche, some people have read his stuff, but I'm willing to bet very few people actually know how to pronounce his name.  Here's a brief tutorial for everyone!

Happy birthday Kunil R.!

The Wisconsin MSTP blog would like to wish a very happy birthday to Kunil!  May your birthday make you as happy as snuggling a bearded dragon apparently makes this cat.

News and Events

Here at the UW MSTP, no person is too important to advocate for continued advancements in science and research. Dr. Anna Huttenlocher, our fearless leader and Director of the UW MSTP, recently co-authored a letter to the editor in support of the continued use of cell lines derived from fetal tissue. The letter was co-authored by Dr. Michael Sussman and co-signed by 678 other faculty members. The full text can be found here.

This Isn't in the Med School Curriculum, So We've Put it Here for You

After all, you never know what kinds of questions
your patients might ask you about the human body.
