Hug a Scientist Today! ...

... with their permission, of course.

Recent studies have suggested that while Americans tend to view scientists as competent and capable, they are also viewed as less warm and trustworthy as individuals in other professions such as doctors, teachers, and nurses. You can read more about these results here.

Perhaps, as the article suggests, scientists could make greater efforts to come across as both trustworthy and factual in order to improve scientific communication with the public. Unfortunately, the article stops short of providing any concrete examples of how to actually make that happen.

Who Knew?

It's Monday, which means a lot of you are probably reaching
for a bit of caffeinated assistance today. But for those who prefer
the decaf stuff, did you ever wonder how they get the caffeine out
of the coffee? Thanks to Mental Floss, you won't need to
wonder any more!

Happy birthday and an apology, Ray Z.!

Dear Ray,
The song below represents the best I could do for funny videos about drug development and pharmacology.  No disrespect intended.  Happy birthday, and keep on truckin' with radiotherapy!

Happy birthday Daryl F!

We've never seen you anywhere close to unruffled, but just in case lab pressure gets you down, here's a video to cheer you up:
(And here's the song the above song is a parody of, which is itself a parody of the Pet Shop Boys:)

A birthday song for Zachary M!

Zach, I bet you thought that because I already made a post for Daryl, I didn't have it in me to find a funny, semi-topical music video for you.  YOU WERE WRONG.  Happy birthday!

It's Labor Day Today!

The UW MSTP hopes that everyone here in the United States is enjoying the long Labor Day weekend. For those that may not know much about the holiday or it's origins (think about it -- do you really know what Labor Day is meant to celebrate?), the History Channel has more than you ever thought you'd know about Labor Day here in just over three minutes. We will neither confirm nor deny that aliens of years past were involved in the creation of this national holiday.
