A Comic Approach to the Facts About Vaccines

Late last year, science cartoonist Maki Naro drew up this amazing comic outlining some basic facts about the history of vaccinations. Even if you are a vaccine expert, worth reading for the nice melding of art and science.

The Vet Students Probably Already Knew These

There are quite a few Pets of the UW MSTP, but here are some
things you may not have known about them.

Video brought to you by Youtube.

Happy birthday Jason C.!

You continue to be an inspiration to all of us: between running a bazillion miles a week, inventing new radioablative devices, and playing the violin, you remind us all how much it's possible for an MD/PhD student to do.

(And, by extension, how lazy we are and little we're actually doing, but you're so cool we don't hold that against you.)

Have a wonderful birthday, and enjoy this tasty-looking cake, chosen in part because nothing good comes up if you search for "liver AND pathology AND cake".  (Trust us.  We tried).

Happy happy birthday Farsh!

Here's to a new year filled with exciting transitions, new opportunities, and, of course, hopefully lots and lots of soccer.  But is regular soccer too easy for you now?  Have you evolved to higher levels of sport?  If this is the case, for your birthday, the UW MSTP blog would like to offer you a new alternative:

Wrong-end-of-the-binoculars soccer: truly the sport of kings.

Happy birthday Laura S.!

Here's wishing you a successful second half of your M2 year and a triumphant return to research!

(Yes, that is a microscope cake with fruit fly cake pops.  And we are sure they are delicious.)

Weekend Recruitment Fun!

Now that the third interview weekend for this cycle of UW MSTP admissions is upon us, a set of seventeen(!) bright and eager recruits will be scurrying around campus today -- each with a current student to navigate for them, of course -- for a day of faculty interviews and later fun times with current UW MSTP students and staff.

As always we hope everyone has a great time while they're in town. Weekend highlights will include meals around town with current students, a UW hockey game vs. Michigan or a performance by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, a tour of a local brewery, and a much shorter tour of our hospital and HSLC facilities.

Looking forward to meeting everyone for a weekend of fun. Get excited!

MSTP Recruiting Weekend 3 Starts Today

Good luck to all the applicants in town today for interviews with the
UW MSTP! We'd offer you advice if we had any, but if you're preparing
for an interview with our program, why are you asking a blog?

Happy belated birthday Lisa!

Here's hoping you had a wonderful birthday skiing, ice climbing, snow-shoeing, flurry-racing, slush-pounding, and whatever other healthy, strenuous, bracing winter activities you enjoy while inadvertently making the Wisconsin MSTP blog feel lazy.

But in case you find yourself in need of a little inspiration as this winter drags on and on, the Wisconsin MSTP blog offers you this link.

Have an excellent year!

Happy belated birthday Mazdak!

Hope you had a fantastic birthday while we were on break!

Here's hoping that the rest of your M2 year goes as well as can be expected.  As a belated birthday gift, we'd like to offer you this cake:

(It's a little premature, but we stand by our decision nonetheless.  :D)

Happy belated birthday Anna H!

The UW MSTP blog may have been on hiatus for your birthday, but you were not forgotten.

As a late birthday present, here's a graphic representation of the study vs. the practice of gross anatomy:

Hope you enjoy the rest of your first year of medical school!  Only 7.5 or so more to go!

Happy belated birthday Arick P.!

Rest assured, you were not forgotten.

Why this cake?

Because as it turns out, this is the number one Google Image result when you search "atherosclerosis AND cake".

So now you know.

Here's wishing you an excellent rest of your year!

Happy belated birthday Drew S!

I bet you thought we forgot about you entirely, that yours was one of the endlessly tragic winter birthdays that conflicted with all sorts of other festivities and gift-giving opportunities.

You thought wrong, Drew.  You thought wrong.

As a neuroscientist extraordinaire, have this Youtube clip for your birthday.  (Just don't let the power go to your head...)

Happy birthday Chadd F.!

The Wisconsin MSTP blog wishes you yet another year of tremendous academic success and offers you this song as a present:

(How many MSTP students can say they have their own theme song?)

Happy birthday Amelia H.!

First MSTP birthday of the new year!

At last year's MSTP retreat it was revealed that you'd like your life story to be narrated by John Cleese, so we offer you this video as a birthday present.  Follow your dreams.

Have a fantastic birthday, and rock the rest of your year!

Math Saves Wrapping Supplies Saves Money!

We might all be done wrapping Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Pagan-Festival/Etc. gifts for the winter, but there are plenty of birthdays, weddings, graduations, and various other occasions that'll call for nicely packaged presents to come in 2015. What if there were not just another way, but an arguably better way to get the same wrapping paper coverage on those boxes?

So for those still using the traditional gift wrapping methods, or the alternative throw-everything-in-a-gift-bag methods, check out this article with how to add a little more math to your gifting.

A belated birthday to Sumit K.!

The UW MSTP blog is sorry that we were on vacation and thus, missed your December birthday...

...but then again, we only found this picture of a baby wombat for you today, so if we had given you a timely birthday post, you'd be minus one baby wombat in your life.

We think this is for the greater good.  Happy birthday, and have a fantastic year!

New Year's Traditions

We're back! And while we may have missed the New Year proper by just
a handful of days, here's an interesting video recapping some unusual
New Year's traditions from around the country.
