Boldly informing you that this is technically NOT the "official" blog of the UWMSTP. Also informing you that there does not exist an "official" blog of the UWMSTP and that this blog is the only one run by actual UWMSTP students with an emphasis on UWMSTP-relevant content. Just sayin'.

Happy Halloween!
In the spirit of Halloween, here's a quick video about a terrifying surgical device from the pre-anesthesia days for those medical history nerds out there. Have fun and stay safe tonight, everyone!

Girl Power
Last night was the first of hopefully many UW MSTP Women in Science dinners, hosted by Dr. Anna H., our brave and fearless MSTP director. It was an evening of good food and lively discussion. The event was organized, in part, by our very own Sara S. who has also been involved with the She's So Boss project. If you're interested in learning more about women in leadership and the She's So Boss project, we encourage you to check it out!

The Anna's
Anna's He., M., B., and Hu. at the 2014 MSTP Retreat
Anna Huttenlocher, our MSTP Director and fearless leader,
commented at the time of this photo that when she
was growing up there were no other Anna's.
One way to address this of course was to recruit as many
Anna's into our program to keep her company!
(We kid; being named Anna is not known to have any
significant effect on admission or attendance at the UW MSTP.)

May this year be more awesome than the last and less awesome than the next. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this unique blend of Star Trek, medicine, and potty humor!

It's That Time of Year Again...
Not just fall, but UW MSTP Recruiting season!
The first interview weekend of the academic year is here! We'll be hosting sixteen bright and eager recruits over the next couple days, and as always we'll be providing each one with a living breathing guide to take care of all of that navigating from place to place.
Recruits will talk to researchers around campus, hang our with current UW MSTP students, and hopefully have a fun time.
This weekend, we're looking forward to taking our recruits to try out some of the eateries on State Street, explore the city a little, watch a UW hockey game or attend a Madison Symphony Orchestra concert, and even take a tour of a local brewery.
Looking forward to meeting everyone for a weekend of fun. Get excited!

Happy happy birthday Rachel L.!
With Halloween fast approaching, the UWMSTPblog would like to give you a little something different for your birthday. So prepare to be shocked and amazed by the following paranormal footage. (We've never seen anything quite like it.)

Birthday birthday!
Happy birthday Layla B.! Congratulations on another successful year of life!
The UWMSTPblog is gonna be honest with you. Your research is complicated. So complicated that the UWMSTPblog has no idea if there is an appropriate funny song or youtube vignette that relates to it. The UWMSTPblog is sorry, and hopes you will enjoy this silly and adorable video about chameleons instead.

Happy birthday Adam B.!
Many happy returns and congratulations on a highly successful PhD career thus far! (But, if you're getting bored with the fast-paced, cut-throat world of academia and are considering your specialty options, the UWMSTPblog has a suggestion for you...)

Flu Shots! Get 'em While They're Hot!
Flu season is upon us, which means it's time for flu shots!
Flu shots are required of all MSTP students and of many faculty and
staff members of the UWSMPH unless documentation of a religious
or medical exception is submitted instead. The deadline to submit
proof of immunization or a request for exception is
8am on November 17th, so don't forget!
University Health Services is providing flu shots at pop-up walk-in clinics
all over campus, with some providing flu shots for UW students
and others for UW faculty/staff.

Happy birthday Laura F.!
Happy birthday Laura!
True story about Laura: Upon joining the MSTP (now so many years ago), she was surprised to learn that, following her interview weekend, she accidentally made a name for herself among the other recruits.
"Did you meet Laura?" "I think so. The girl who swears all the time?"
Here is a video of the birthday present we are all hoping Laura receives. (Mildly NSFW, due to one instance of profanity)
